Diabetes is a serious disease affecting 16 million Americans and the numbers are
rising! Bluefield Regional Medical Center understands the devastating
complications of uncontrolled diabetes and how it directly contributes to heart
attacks and strokes. Our diabetes education team, consisting of registered
nurses, physical therapists, registered dieticians, pharmacists and social
workers, provide free comprehensive education classes emphasizing
self-management skills, nutritional management and the ADA standards of care.
All participants will have an initial assessment prior to the class. Individual
instruction is also available with a physician referral. Call 327-1697 for
additional information.
The American Association of
Diabetes Educators endorses the newly-revised
American College of Endocrinology diabetes guidelines:
* Target Alc of 6.5 or below
* Target blood sugar of 110 or below before eating
* Target blood sugar of 140 or below after eating
* Lower the age of diabetes screening for high-risk groups from 45 to 30.
Recent statistics from the Centeres for Disease Control and Prevention have
shown that diabetes has increased 33% from 1990 to 1998, with an alarming
increase (76%) among people aged 30 to 39.

SELF-MANAGEMENT EDUCATION
CLASS SCHEDULE FOR 2006
The BRMC
diabetes Self-management education program has earned the Certificate of
Recognition from the American Diabetes Association. This program offers
high-quality education to the patients it serves. Assuring high-quality
education for self-care is one of the primary goals of the Education
Recognition program. Through the support of our diabetes education team, which
includes dieticians, pharmacists, physical therapists, social workers,
and registered nurses, individuals with diabetes will learn the necessary
skills to take control of their diabetes.
These classes will be held in
the Education Room of Building A, suite
#105. One family member, a spouse or significant other is welcome to
attend with the person having diabetes. Individual sessions are available
for those individuals requiring insulin instruction, instruction for
gestational diabetes, all children with diabetes and individuals with
barriers to learning. A physician order is required. Call 327-1697 to
pre-register (seating is limited), all class participants must have an
initial assessment completed prior to the class. Medicare and most
insurances cover the cost of Diabetes Self-Management Education.
