What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is the dynamic field of medical care that uses techniques such as exercise, massage, and physical agents to treat certain functional impairments. Among its goals are education, the relief of pain, increased flexibility, wound healing, improvement of muscle strength, and increased functional mobility. Physical therapists are skilled in examining and treating people in order to detect, correct, and alleviate problems, as well as prevent further problems.

Physical therapists work with people of all ages and diagnoses. The goals of physical therapy are individual to the patient and their specific needs. Ultimately the desired outcome for physical therapy is for the patient to lead an independent and active lifestyle as determined by their level of function as well as to achieve other goals as identified by the patient.

Bluefield Regional Medical Center has a qualified physical therapy staff who work with a variety of people to include: hospital inpatients and outpatients, patients on the skilled nursing unit, children in both the hospital and a local school system as part of their academic program, and pulmonary rehab.
